Newport's main post office to relocate

South Wales Argus: RELOCATING: Newport's Post Office will be moving from its current home on Bridge Street RELOCATING: Newport's Post Office will be moving from its current home on Bridge Street

NEWPORT’S main post office is set to move, officials revealed yesterday.

The Post Office plans will mean that its current base at 9 Bridge Street, Newport, will be relocated 750 metres away to Unit 19 Sovereign Arcade at the Kingsway Centre, where it would be known as the Newport Post Office.

Should the plans go ahead, following a six-week public consultation period, facilities would include seven counter positions; three self-service kiosks; a dedicated mails acceptance point, and two private consultation rooms.

The relocation would also make the new premises more easily accessible, with a level entrance to premises with automatic door, with low-level counters and writing desks.

A six-week public consultation on the move will begin today and will close on April 2, with customers asked to give their opinions on the proposed new service, which would see them benefit from service in large, modern, open-plan premises ideally located for shops and local transport links.

The new Newport Post Office would offer customers the same wide range of services with no reduction in opening hours.

It would open 9am to 5.30pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 9.30am to 5.30pm on Tuesdays.

Roger Gale, Crown network general manager, said: “We are committed to maintaining Post Office services in Newport and we hope that this proposal will be welcomed by our customers.”

Good idea to move it as far away from the new bus stops as possible. Sums Newport up perfectly.

It would be cheaper to alter the entrance and lower some counters in bridge street, and as stated above it would be further away from the new "bus station"..

How so? The Main PO is vacating the centre of Newport because of rent levels. Just around the corner is a street of vacated shops, an unstoppable trend with HMV being just the latest. Because of rent levels. Join the dots. I assume high street landlords are content to leave premises empty because all they now value is the asset equity in the lease to use as leverage against borrowing. Certainly not for local reinvestment. Certainly not in Zooport.

The crisis feeds on itself. End of.

Agreed the rents must be ridiculous. Moving into Kingsway is slightly different to vacating the city centre though isn't it?

The location isn't as good for the overall vibe and footfall though, which is definitely a concern. Hopefully that part of town will attract another solicitor/estate agents/employment agency or similar!

I don't believe the numbers given on the map relate to unit numbers. You can see the empty premises don't have a number assigned to them. The unit number is the bit that makes up the address

I think it makes perfect sense for the post office to move, the space that they have at the moment is underused and therefore could do with cutting some costs, there isn't as much need for the post office now that all benefits are paid directly into a bank account.

Also having a draw away from the current footfall will mean that people are going to be attracted to the shops along the route that they'll have to take to get there. Maybe having to walk a few extra metres will help trim those thighs :)

The only dowside that I see are those that have mobility issues. But at the moment I think that the only parking for those with diabilites is to either park anywhere with the blue badge or to park in the kingsway anyway.

I think the police need shaming over the handling of parking and minor traffic offences. I see so many cars parked on double yellow lines and either dangerous or just plain daft. The police do absolutly nothing about it, I see them just drive by when there is a car parked on double yellow lines and right on top of a junction. I think it's getting worse because nothing is being done.

Nobody likes traffic wardens because they dole out the fines, but if you don't park where your not supposed to then you don't get fined.

IT MAKE YOU WONDER ?
The things that are going on i've said before you have to look deep into what is happening to Newport busses going back on themselves to the new bus station. When they could go down bridge street on a circular route via skinner st,
some routes don't go to the market. to give you one of the top of my head the christchurch route.
I no there are more? and you get the busses out of the congested area. But thats not the point they are going to move the newsagent again so move the old lord as well put him up by the Tredegar arcade.
Now you have people in the center again we make it easier instead of harder to get into the city.
I have noticed the bus inspectors have gone eight or nine since last week.
cost cutting i expect here we go again you must remember we own newport transport albeit at arms length they i believe it is a pound for lease of the depot, And about the same for running rights to new bus station.
And they you have you believe they are losing money?
And they have to cut services.
You get rid of staff from operating because you short staffed and they cannot drive. why did you employ or train them ?
You cut your fitters and get contractors and when busses breakdown they have to wait two hours to get attention when on route,
WHEN DID THE COMPANY BUY HOUSES FOR THE MANAGEMENT AND NEW TOP OF THE RANGE CARS.
NOTE. So what going on this look set for the council to sell or the bosses to fix for a good profit in their wallet.
ok. THATS OUT THERE NOW SO KEEP THE POST OFFICE IN BRIDGE ST AND GET SOME BUSSES TO IT FOR GODS. FIX IT DON'T **** IT UP

That is assuming that everyone that uses the Post Office gets there by bus of course. Putting it near the Kingsways car park that is free parking for 2 hours seems like a good idea to me and will stop people moaning about parking over the zebra crossing. The Cambrian car park was free but that has now shut so the only other parking near the Bridge Street Post Office is up the hill which costs an arm and a leg.

The unit they are moving into is empty too and has been for some time. I think it is fantastic. Since the bus station moved this end of town needs something to attract footfall to the area. Everyone was supportive and considerate of how the market suffered when work was being done on it. Businesses down near Kingsway Centre are suffering just as much at the moment. This news is like a lifeline to us.
