THE birth centre at Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, Ystrad Mynach will host an open day on Friday February 28, to women considering a midwifery-led environment for their pregnancy and birth.

The unit is growing in popularity, with an average 30 babies born there every month, and it has a range of facilities and support services, including two water birthing pools, breast feeding support, baby massage classes, and parent education.

There is also a day assessment unit where midwives can arrange an appointment for women to be seen if there any concerns, reducing the need for travel to other hospitals.

“We want to encourage anyone who is considering using our services to come along and see for themselves what’s on offer here” said lead midwife Jackie George.

Caerphilly count yborough has had a successful midwifery-led service since 2002, and the 26-strong staff have built up a great deal of knowledge and experience.

Women with low risk pregnancies are able to have their babies at the unit, and antenatal care is also provided for women with higher risk pregnancies, who then have their baby at consultant-led units in Gwent's larger hospitals.

The open day will run from 10am-3pm, but inquiries are welcome from women considering having their antenatal care and births at the unit. More information is available on 01443 802429.
