A NEWPORT mother is holding an Elvis charity night tonight in honour of her son to raise funds for St David’s Hospice Care Foundation.

Jackie Lewis, an IT teacher, has been fundraising for St David’s since her son, lifeguard Steven Lewis, died, aged 31, of stomach cancer in December 2011.

Steve worked for Newport council and taught hundreds of city children how to swim. When he was diagnosed, he was looked after by his family doctor, nurses and St David’s Hospice Care which let him stay at home for the last four weeks of his life.

Within four months of Steven’s death, Mrs Lewis decided that she would do something positive that he would be proud of and decided that she would campaign and fundraise in aid of St David’s.

Since then she, her friends and family, have raised more than £22,000 in aid of the hospice in memory of her son. Last week the Argus reported that two close family friends ran the Newport half marathon in memory of Steven.

Mrs Lewis said: “Our original aim was to raise £20,000, so when we reached that target upped it to £25,000 and now I think we will almost definitely reach that sum by the end of the year.”

Other projects in the pipeline include the no annual Spring bank holiday fancy dress walk around Newport, a curry nights on April 8, a ‘Blue Belles Walk’ around Cwmbran boating lake in June and another ‘It’s a knockout’ fun swim at NISV.

Mrs Lewis added: “I just feel amazed that every day we seem to have more people signing up to raise money for St David’s in Steve’s honour.”

The evening will feature entertainment from Elvis tribute artist Dean Mack at the St Julian’s Conservative Club.

Raffle tickets will be sold on the night with prizes to suit everyone including wine, watches, a hairdressing voucher and much more. Tickets are £5.
