THREE Newport teens have been named apprentices of the year by Newport Transport and bus manufacturer Alexander Dennis Ltd.

Jordan Gin 17, Connor Dyer 18 and Ashley Davies 19, were chosen out of the nine apprentices at Newport Transport and all won an ADL Apprentice of the Year award.

Carl Yeaman, engineering director at Newport Transport said: “Since joining the Newport Transport team all three have shown to be outstanding additions to our workforce and have demonstrated fast improvements in their skills. We are very proud of our apprentices and pleased they are demonstrating a desire to become part of the family here at Newport Transport. As a company we fully and actively support the apprenticeship scheme and we believe it is beneficial to our business.”

All three apprentices are enrolled in the practical workforce Automotive Engineering course at Coleg Gwent and are currently undertaking the apprenticeships programme at the Newport Transport workshops doing mechanical repair and maintenance as well as vehicle body repair.

Newport Transport currently employs nine apprentices and many staff in their 60 strong engineering workforce started as such many years ago.

Ashley Davies, 19, is in his second year of Vehicle Body Repair and said: “It is amazing to have won this award and I’m very grateful to both Newport Transport and Coleg Gwent. I’ve been with Newport Transport since June 2013 and hope my apprenticeship might result in a full time job once I graduate next year.”
