A NEWPORT man was given a 12 week suspended sentence after he broke a restraining order three days after he was given it.

Gareth Burnell-Jones, 43, was ordered by Cwmbran magistrates on February 19 not to approach his former partner Donna Jones.

But in the early hours of February 22 he went to her home on Playford Crescent, after he soiled himself and claimed he needed a change of clothes for work later on that day.

Mr Burnell-Jones, who works as a fitter’s mate, suffers from bipolar disorder and stomach problems, Newport Magistrates’ Court heard.

District Judge David Parsons said it was “grossly irresponsible” and “extraordinary” of police to grant him bail on February 22 and told Mr Burnell-Jones if he breaks the order again he will go to prison.

Mr Burnell-Jones will also need to complete 60 hours unpaid work and pay £85 costs and an £80 victim surcharge.
