NEWPORT porter Mike Webber is a double lifesaver - eight years after saving a baby dropped from a window during a blaze, he has now saved the life of a guest in the hotel where he works.

Last Friday March 7, Mr Webber of Harlequin Court ,Newport, made his way to the Hilton Hotel on Chepstow Road, where he has worked as a night porter for the last eight years, for a shift that would be like no other.

In the early hours of Saturday morning, Mr Webber was called to one of the rooms.

The 46-year-old said: “I got a call from my night manager to attend one of the rooms. We had a first aid request.”

When Mr Webber arrived at the room, a woman was lying on the floor.

The father-of-two said: “I put her in a recovery position. But while she was in the recovery position, I became under the impression she had stopped breathing and maybe her heart had stopped.

“I placed her onto her back and checked if I could hear any breathing.”

When he couldn’t, Mr Webber called on his first-aid training to begin resuscitating the guest.

“I admitted mouth to mouth and half a dozen compressions to her chest. Then she coughed and spluttered and came round.”

Paramedics arrived at the scene shortly after.

Mr Webber said: “The paramedic said I had done a fine job and the situation could have been a lot worse if I hadn’t done what I had.

“I just hope she’s ok now.”

The woman, who was not from the Newport area, is understood to have since made a full recovery.

Mr Webber said he wasn’t panicked by the situation but was able to take control due to his first-aid skills.

He said: “I’ve been first aid trained and I’m quite interested in it. It’s a good idea to learn just the basics at least.

“I was very calm. I just took it on myself and got on with it. Obviously when the paramedics turned up I just stepped aside.”

A spokeswoman from the Welsh Ambulance Service said: “We had a call at 12.29am on Saturday March 8 to an emergency at the Hilton hotel, Newport. Two rapid response vehicles and ambulance attended and a woman in her 30s was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital. A porter was doing CPR on our arrival.”

THIS isn’t the first time Mike Webber has played hero. On December 9 2005, Mr Webber was on hand to catch a ninth-month old baby, whose mother had been forced to drop him from a first floor window as a fire engulfed her home on Harlequin Drive.

The mother, Katie Rogers who was 19 at the time, hailed her neighbour, Mr Webber a "hero". She told the Argus: “I didn't want to throw him but the smoke was so thick and he was coughing and spluttering. In the end I had to let go and Mike caught him.”

Speaking to the Argus at the time, Mr Webber said: “She refused at first but I said 'I guarantee you I will catch him', and down he went. I played rugby for years and just imagined it was a rugby ball coming out of the mist on a dewy afternoon."

The former Newport Saracens player added: “I just happened to be in the right place at the right time."

Mr Webber went on to charge the front door open and aid the trapped family’s escape.
