AN ELDERLY woman, rescued from a house fire in Abertillery earlier this month, is now said to be in a stable condition in hospital.

Firefighters rescued the 77-year-old from the first floor of a two-storey terrace on Bryngwyn Road in Six Bells at around 7.30am on March 11, after a fire in the kitchen area on the ground floor spread to an adjoining property.

A 78-year-old man, who residents say is the woman’s husband, was also initially taken to Nevill Hall Hospital in Abergavenny, but both were later moved to Morriston Hospital in Swansea, where they remain in a "stable" condition, according to Gwent Police. The woman's condition had been "critical" in the days following the incident.

The fire is not being treated as suspicious.
