Yesterday saw the first of the three day event take place at Pontypool Active Living Centre.

Organised by Pontypool Community Council, pupils aged from six to 16, will take part in Welsh language singing, music and dancing competitions during the 16th annual festival.

The first to take to the stage were the infant competitors, which saw six Torfaen schools take part.

The day started with a group recitation of Dau Gi Back, a solo recitation of Dysgu Cyfri, and solo singing of Coch, Melyn a Gwyrdd.

Then followed folk dancing to Jac Y Do, musical composition of Y Mor and the choir sang Deffra.

The overall winner of the Infant section was Padre Pio Roman Catholic Primary School.

The winner of the group recitation was Ysgol Panteg, the solo recitation winner was Istyn Jones of Padre Pio, and the winner of the solo singing category was Ella Jones, also of Padre Pio.

The winner of the folk dancing section was Ysgol Panteg and the winner of the musical composition was Griffithstown Primary.

There were joint winners of the choir section, with first place being awarded to Ysgol Panteg and Padre Pio.

Speaking on behalf of Pontypool Community Council, Ruth Tucker, said: “It was an excellent start to the three day event, and everyone is impressed with the quality of performances that the pupils presented.

“Padre Pio didn’t take part last year but returned with a winning streak, but all of the schools that took part showed themselves to be worthy competitors.”

The junior section of the competition will take place tomorrow, and the comprehensive schools will compete on Friday.
