NEWPORT Transporter Bridge was among the worldwide famous landmarks which went dark for an hour on Saturday as countries throughout the world raised awareness of the need to conserve the planet’s resources.
The 60-minute ‘lights out’ celebration swept around the globe with a record-breaking 158 countries taking part in the event known as Earth Hour.
The lights on other iconic landmarks including the Empire State Building, the Eiffel Tower and the Kremlin were also turned off, with the Senedd and Caerphilly Castle were among other Welsh buildings to plunged into darkness.
The World Wildlife Fund initiative had the backing of Newport-born actor Michael Sheen and members of Wales’ rugby squad.
It coincides this year with the Welsh government’s ‘national conversation’ on the country’s future as it prepares to introduce the Future Generations Bill.
World Wildlife Fund Cymru hopes the law will help safeguard the planet for future generations and tackle big challenges such as climate change and threats to forests and oceans.
