FOLLOWING an urgent appeal for donations to save Newport wildlife charity City Wildlife, an anonymous donor has given £5,000 to the charity.

City Wildlife, run solely by volunteers, faces closure if it fails to raise the £30,000 needed to keep it up and running following a management shake-up and a lack of donations.

But thanks to donations from various members of the public and a generous individual who donated £5,000; it seems there is light at the end of the tunnel.

“So far we have received a total of £7,500 in donations and fundraising events for the Trust,” said volunteer member Lucykate Bodman.

Since it was founded in 2009, the charity in Albert Avenue, Newport, takes in over 2,500 animals a year.

“The money we have been receiving has been used to sustain our existing work asWe currently have 12 hedgehogs in our care and we have used the money to go towards their food,” Lucykate added.

The charity operates a 24/7 service with just six volunteers.

As well as continuing to appeal for the public to come forward and donate Miss Bodman said that the charity is looking to fundraise through events such as cake sales, and fancy dress events.

Despite the temporary closure of the trust members have also continued to work hard to get it back up and running; working with Nash College students to redesign their website which is temporarily down.

On the initial fundraising appeal spokeswoman for the charity Sharon Swithin said: “Lack of funding is a major issue in what we do. We need to be able to pay for things like heating and vet costs.”
