Chris Evans, Islwyn MP, encouraged residents to 'back your local' when he officially opened the new Mason Arms in Risca.

Joining licensee Jackie O’Brien and executives from Punch Taverns, Mr Evans said that pubs were at the heart of the community as he pulled pints for a packed crowd of locals, friends and family at the pub on Mill Street.

Ms O’Brien said: "This is a completely new venture for me. The Masons has always been my local and I could always see its potential.

"Previously, it looked dated and I shared Punch’s vision to give the pub a new lease of life and run it as my own. The pub looks fantastic and I can’t believe the transformation, it looks completely different, with new stylish décor that has stayed in the traditional style and kept the historic charm of this old building.’

Mr Evans said: "I am delighted that the Mason Arms has re-opened with five new jobs being created in Risca. It is vital that we support our local pubs.

"Not only do they provide jobs, they are a place for people to meet and socialise. This is why I have signed Early Day Motion 57 to support a fair deal for pubs.’

The Early Day Motion is part of the Fair Deal for Your Local campaign which aims to support licensees of local pubs.
