PUPILS at Caerleon Comprehensive celebrated an evening of music to showcase ensembles who competed in the regional rounds of a national music festival.

A total of 93 pupils took part in the regional rounds of the Music For Youth National Music Festival competition including a senior orchestra, traditional jazz band, wind band, big band, jazz octet, brass band, senior choir and sixth form choir.

Cheryl Jones, head of music at the school, said: “The standard of music is quite high, we wanted an opportunity to show the public and parents what the pupils can do.

“Over the last few years we’ve been quite successful and performed at the final of the competition in the Royal Albert Hall.”

Musical pieces performed at the Celebration of Music Evening held at the school on March 20 include Tchaikovsky’s Swan Lake, St Louis Blues and The Empire Strikes Back Medley.

The senior choir performed Phil Collins’ You’ll be In My Heart from the Disney film Tarzan and the sixth form choir performed Viva La Vida by Coldplay.
