CAERPHILLY council has brought in almost £20,000 in littering and dog mess charges, between April 1 last year and March 31 this year.

The council said 256 fixed penalties at £75 a piece have been issued to people failing to clean up after their dogs in that time and dropping litter, and described the stance it is taking against the menace as “playing hard ball”.

Not paying the fixed penalty fine can result in court prosecutions where magistrates can fine culprits up to £1,000.

Caerphilly council cabinet member for community and leisure services, Councillor David Poole, said: “We know a large number of residents take great pride in the appearance of their local environment, but unfortunately there are still a small number of negligent people who feel it is acceptable to drop litter and let their dogs defecate in public places.

“As a council we are playing hard ball with these offenders – those who are caught will be hit in the pocket. Please respect our beautiful environment.”
