POLICE are appealing for witnesses after a man was attacked in Newport city centre early this morning.
A Gwent Police spokeswoman said an assault took place at about 12.30am on Baneswell Road and that a man was taken to the Royal Gwent Hospital by paramedics.
Residents reported that the man was "hit over the head with a wine bottle".
One local worker, who wished to remain anonymous, said he had noticed a pool of blood on the path outside the Baneswell Store at 7am today. Part of the pavement was cordoned off by police.
Staff at Nuttall and Parker estate agents were only allowed into their office at 9.15am after the police had completed their forensic investigations.
The path remained cordoned off until 10am.
Police have asked that anyone with information call them on 101 and quote incident number 13 14/4/14.
