A NEWPORT charity is in for the chance to secure a prime location on the city’s Monopoly board.

Voting lines will open next Friday for the public to choose one Newport charity to ‘pass go’ and land on a prime location on the brand new customised Monopoly board for the city.

The charity - which would have to be formally registered with the Charity Commission, as well as have a Newport “connection” - will get to appear in the very upper reaches of the board.

Sitting alongside the swanky Newport landmarks that will get to replace Mayfair and Park Lane from the original Monopoly, the charity will appear on what is traditionally a ‘tax’ space where players pay the equivalent of one hundred Monopoly dollars for landing on it.

“Players landing on this location have to make donations to the Monopoly bank – in the form of a one hundred Monopoly dollar fine,” says Dan Taylor, Head of Monopoly Development at Winning Moves UK, who are making the board under official license from MONOPOLY owners Hasbro.

“So we feel this is a nice fit.”

The new board will feature 22 Newport property landmarks out this October, in time for Christmas.

When news was announced in March that the city is ‘Passing GO’ the public was invited to nominate local landmarks and leading organisations.

“We have received the most wonderful suggestions and nominations in the thousands,” adds Mr Taylor.

“We would like to formally thank each and every person who has voted – and as an extra thank you we’ve now decided to offer a charity its very own prime location.”

Voting starts from starts from 00.01am on April 25 and ends midnight May 1.
