A £10MILLION housing project designed to modernise three blocks of flats is on course to be completed by spring 2015.

Social landlord Newport City Homes hopes to finish the upgrade to bring the three, 82-flat blocks to Welsh housing quality standards by May next year.

The re-cladding of the Greenwood block in Beaufort Road, St Julian’s, is nearly done and the internal works are due to be completed by the end of this year, a spokeswoman said yesterday.

All the tenants will have new kitchens and bathrooms, double glazed windows, electric heating systems and electric panel radiators will improve the energy efficiency of all homes.

The layout of flats will also change to give the best use of space and will see bathrooms, bedrooms and lounges accessed from the hallways.

Externally, the new cladding and roofs will help to improve insulation at the towers built decades ago.

A NCH spokeswoman said: “There has been good progress over the last six months on our tower blocks programme.

“Newport City Homes will continue to work with residents and contractors over the next year to ensure we deliver improved standards of accommodation and energy efficiency.

“We expect to complete all three tower blocks by May 2015.”

The internal works of the Milton Court tower in Hendre Farm Road, Ringland, are nearing completion and internal works are expected to begin by the start of next month.

Meanwhile, the external upgrade of the Hillview block in Gaer Road, Gaer, is underway with the internal improvements due to start in June.

Contractor Wates Living Spaces is overseeing the refurbishment with the help of almost 100 contractors.
