MORE than 100 people gathered in Brynmawr this afternoon to witness the re-enactment of the crucifixion to mark Good Friday.

The Passion Play, which began outside the famous Market Hall Cinema at 2pm, attracted regular churchgoers as well as curious residents who had come out to bask in the glorious sunshine.

Around 20 volunteers from the Valleys Family Church, including children, depicted the moments leading up to Jesus' crucifixion, as they made their way down to the town's Asda store.

More volunteers were on hand to stop traffic to allow the 13th annual parade to make its way through the shopping centre, before the final scene was performed on a nearby hill. It was followed by a prayer and an upbeat worship song.

Stuart Wheatman, pastor of the Valleys Family Church, played the role of Jesus during the play.

The 45-year-old, who told the gathered crowd he became Christian aged 16, said this year's turnout had been particularly supportive.

He said: "It's always encouraging to see people turn out in their numbers. It's fantastic and great to see the people come out so we can all share God's love.

"It's important for people to know the pain Jesus went through for us and the story of the crucifixion."
