BLAENAVON Town councillors are calling for traffic calming measures on Cemetery Road after a child was hit by a car.

Mother, Cara Boddington, is backing the call from Blaenavon Town Council for measures to be taken after her 11 year old son was hit by a car.

She recalls that she was informed of the incident by a stranger who used her son’s mobile phone to contact her and she said she went into a ‘panic’.

She explained that her son, Elijah, was on a public bus after attending an after school club at Abersychan School, on March 12.

He had walked around the bus to cross the road and was hit by a passing car.

Mrs Boddington has been told by onlookers that her son got up in a daze and made his way over to a wall, where he was assisted by passers-by.

He was then taken to Nevill Hall Hospital.

She said: “He was very lucky to be ok but suffered bruises, swollen ankles and whip lash.

“Thankfully the car wasn’t going any faster or things could have been a lot worse.”

She described the road as ‘very busy’ as it has a corner, three junctions and traffic lights.

She said: “For traffic calming measures to be installed the whole road layout would have be reassessed.”

At Blaenavon Town Council meeting on March 26, councillors agreed that measures must be taken to aid people to cross Cemetery Road.

They said cars tend to speed down there, so traffic calming measures, such as speed bumps, and the installation of a crossing, should be considered.

A spokeswoman for Gwent Police said there is no action being taken against the driver of the car.
