THE SERVANTS' quarters at one of Gwent's 'romantic ruins', Ruperra Castle, are up for sale and will be available to the highest bidder next month.

The former servants quarters at the historic Ruperra Castle in Lower Machen, has a guide price of £50,000 and could offer the new owner their own chance at a Downton Abbey style way of life.

The building is adjacent to the Grade II listed castle, built in 1626 by Sir Thomas Morgan.

Paul Fosh, owner of Paul Fosh Auctions who is selling the property, said: “This is a unique and historic building with a fascinating history linking it to Newport’s illustrious Tredegar House.

“We are selling half, the left hand side of the staff accommodation at Ruperra Castle, which has a collection of rooms arranged over ground and first floors.

“Ruperra Castle, which is not for sale, itself has suffered over the years since it was built in 1626 and now, after almost 400 years, the castle is little more than a romantic ruin."

The former home of John Morgan, Ruperra Castle was rebuilt after being destroyed by fire in 1785. It was left to decay after another fire in 1941 when being used by the British Army.

Mr Fosh said: “The staff building, half of which we’re selling, was substantially rebuilt and refurbished in the early 20th Century and although unoccupied for a number of years it is believed to be fairly sound but does need a complete overhaul.

“The unique property however is situated in glorious rural setting within the remaining grounds of the estate.”

Overgrown Ruperra Castle, recognised as among the first ‘mock’ castles built in Wales, entertained King Charles I after his toils at the Battle of Naseby. Godfrey Charles Morgan, 1st Viscount Tredegar, who was a captain in the 17th Lancers during the infamous Charge of the Light Brigade in the Crimea War, was born at Ruperra

The Number 1 staff house at Ruperra Castle is on offer at the next Paul Fosh Auctions sale, which will be held on Thursday, May 8, starting at 5pm at The Park Inn Hotel, Circle Way East, Llanedeyrn, Cardiff CF23 9XF.
