A CWMBRAN man who was involved in two road accidents on the same day was found guilty of driving a car while unfit through drugs.

Jordan Dennis, 21, of Monnow Court, Thornhill, Cwmbran, had denied driving a vehicle while unfit through drugs on August 12.

But he had pleaded guilty to the charges of failing to stop after a road accident and driving a vehicle on a road without care due and attention in relation to the same day.

In a trial at Newport Magistrates' Court, the court heard how on August 12 police received reports at around 11.45am that a Nisan Micra was being driven erratically.

PC Bethan Harris was travelling on Edlogan Way, Croesyceiliog at 11.53am when she came across Gemma Jude who said she had been travelling along Edlogan Way and stopped at a roundabout waiting for a break in the traffic when she was jolted forward by a Nissan Micra driven by the defendant which hit the back of her car.

The court heard that the car failed to stop and continued on its way to Cwmbran Tyres at around 12pm. After the tyre was repaired, the defendant was advised not to drive by a staff member but drove away at speed on the wrong side of the road, before colliding with a van on LLanfrechfa Way.

The defendant was later arrested by PC Harris under suspicion of driving under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

Giving evidence Gemma Jude said that she felt a huge jolt and saw a silver car in the back of her.

She said she pulled to one side but the driver moved passed her and made a hand gesture in the air.

Witness Michael Green said that at around 12.30pm that day, he was coming off the roundabout on his way to Newport on Llanfrefchfa Way when he saw a driver travelling at speed along the wrong side of the road before it crashed into him.

A report concluded Dennis was impaired in coordination- a likely result of toxication -while traces of cannabis and drug diazepam known as Valium were found in his urine.

In mitigation Dennis said that he had taken diazepam for back pain days prior to the incident and that he had smoked cannabis occasionally in the past but had smoked the drug at least three days prior.

Dennis was sentenced to 12 weeks in custody suspended for 12 months and 180 hours of unpaid work.

He was also disqualified from driving for 36 months and ordered to pay £580 in costs.
