AN APPEAL by a Cwmbran animal sanctuary to raise £500 has reached its target.

Earlier this week All Creatures Great and Small appealed to Argus readers to help raise enough money to pay the cost of an operation for Patchy the dog.

The springer spaniel was born with one eye and needed surgery to remove the remnant part of the under-developed eye.

He was taken to the sanctuary at Llanfrechfa more than a week ago because his owners no longer had time to care for him.

At just 16 months-old, he has already had four owners.

Matt Nicholls, social programmes manager at the centre, said Patchy – who he describes as a beautiful, friendly dog – has now had his operation and it was a success.

Mr Nicholls said: “He’s a little sore and not very happy about his wonderful ‘lamp shade’ that he has on his head to stop him scratching his eye.

“We managed to raise the money for his operation and reached the target late on Tuesday night.”

He added: “We would like to thank all of his supporters who have been very generous. Going forward, we will now be seeking to find him a forever home.”

Mr Nicholls said the sanctuary has received many calls from the public offering Patchy a home.

“It’s fantastic news,” he said. “As soon as he has fully recovered a home visit will be completed for his new potential home.”
