BTEC Music students from Coleg Gwent’s Blaenau Gwent Learning Zone joined forces with Brynmawr Operatic Society to provide vital technical services for their annual showing at the Market Hall Cinema, Brynmawr.

The students assisted the society with technical services and equipment, coached by music lecturer Nicholas Wheeler, who organised the stage lighting and technical crew for the week-long task.

The five-night performance of Guys and Dolls in March saw learners undertake various disciplines including stage-management, live sound, lighting and backstage crew. This collaboration gave the students valuable assessment opportunities within a real working show, along with confidence to apply the learned skills in future tasks.

Level 2 learner Emily Tapper, 19, from Ebbw Vale, took on the job of deputy stage manager.

She said: “This was a fantastic opportunity for me to be working on such a great show, with a great cast. It has now given me the confidence to explore more areas of the industry.”

Lecturer Nicholas Wheeler said: “The students have done a fantastic and professional job working on the production.

“I am extremely proud of their dedication and hard work.”
