THE mother of a “miracle” Cwmbran teenager who survived a life-threatening car accident, defying doctor’s predictions, has heaped praise on his school for fundraising on his behalf.

Kyle Hutchings, 14, was left fighting for his life in intensive care following the crash on November 29, 2013, near Greenmeadow Community Farm, at the same time as his 15-week old brother was just wards away with major heart problems.

Their mother, Lisa, said Kyle had since made an “amazing” recovery at The Children’s Trust in Surrey since being hit as a pedestrian on Ty Gwyn Way, but, sadly, baby Jalen lost his battle in December.

She said life had been cruel to the family.

“You can’t but think why us?” Mrs Hutchings said. “We were already dealing with the heartbreak of Jalen’s situation when Kyle was hurt.

“I think my husband, Andrew, and I just went into autopilot. You just get through it, somehow. You have to. The only consolation is that Jalen is out of pain now and Kyle has made an incredible recovery.”

“Jalen had major problems, not least omphalocele, which is when the organs are outside the body,” she added. “Doctors told us that Kyle shouldn’t have survived too because of his injuries, so to see how he has fought back has been amazing.

“He’s not the same as he was. He is unable to walk and needs a wheelchair but he has made significant strides in his recovery. He has only recently started communicating again too.”

The family is now hoping to have Kyle home, to Thornhill, for his birthday on May 16, when he will be 15.

Mrs Hutchings said they owed much to The Children’s Trust where Kyle has been receiving treatment, which provides physio, occupational therapy, speech and language therapy and developmental play.

To show their appreciation they plan to donate to the trust, using funds raised by Llantarnam School.

Staff and classmates of Kyle have raised more than £2,280 through numerous events including a Mile for Kyle during Sports Relief which saw the whole of Year 10 don red, which is his favourite colour. Raffles were also held and £500 donated by the choir of one of the maths teachers.

Pastoral support officer at the school, Amanda Butler, said: “Kyle was a quiet, sweet little boy.

“His tragic story, along with his brother’s, touched everyone I think.”

Mrs Hutchings is also fundraising for The Children’s Trust.
