A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The manhole repairs on the M4 will need more time to complete, due to weather conditions and the lane closure will now remain overnight and be removed by 6am tomorrow.”

THE manhole that collapsed on the M4 at Newport during rush hour this morning has been repaired.

The manhole, near to the start of the dedicated exit slip road for J24 eastbound, caused long delays for motorists as far back as the Tredegar Park exit at junction 28.

One lane was closed while emergency repairs were carried out but is expected to re-open at around 3pm this afternoon.

A Welsh Government spokesperson said: “The delays on the M4 this morning were due to a failed manhole. This has been repaired and all lanes are planned to be re-opened in time for this afternoons peak travel times.”

Drivers are warned of delays of up to 45 minutes and the lane will stay closed "for several hours more".

Highways staff on the scene dealing with the collapsed manhole near to the start of the dedicated exit slip road for Junction 24.

One lane is closed and very slow traffic reported on the M4 in Newport due to a collapsed manhole.

Emergency repairs are being made on the eastbound side between J25, at Caerleon and J24 at the Coldra with congestion stretching to J29 A48(M).
