A SWIMMING fundraising event for St David’s Hospice Care will be held this summer in memory of Newport lifeguard Steven Lewis.

The event will be held on July 13 at the NISV to raise funds for the hospice which cares for cancer patients and their families.

The Steve Lewis ‘It’s A Knock Out’ Swimming Event is in memory of Steven Lewis who died of T4 stomach cancer at the age of 31 in 2011.

His mother Jackie Lewis has embarked on a huge fundraising campaign to help St David’s continue to provide the care it gave to her son during his illness.

Steven who had no hope of treatment was put under the care of St David’s by the Royal Gwent Hospital.

This meant he could live the last month of his life at home and not in a hospital bed.

It also meant St David’s were able to provide the support that would help the family to learn how to cope without Steven in their lives.

Since April 2012, friends and family have raised over £21,000 through a variety of community events.

His mother said: “I hope you will join us this year and beyond to experience the way we live life to the full as Steven did while raising money which will help St David’s to continue with the care of patients and their families at a time when they are needed most.”
