A SENIOR Newport Tory councillor is to take the helm as leader of the opposition when Tory leader Matthew Evans becomes mayor.

David Fouweather, Conservative councillor for Allt-yr-Yn, was endorsed by his group to replace Cllr Evans on Tuesday night.

It is likely he will only serve as leader for a year, with Cllr Evans then seeking to return.

Cllr Fouweather, who will lead the group from May 20 and was the only candidate for the role, said: “I’m delighted that the Conservative group have had the confidence in me to lead them.”

He said his priorities would be to ensure the city centre development went ahead, that “democracy returns to Newport” and that the citizens are listened to. He would be “more than happy” for Cllr Evans to resume the role.

Cllr Evans said: “I’m sure David will do an excellent job.”
