THE owner of the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport, Sir Terry Matthews, has made it onto the Sunday Times’ Super-Rich List for 2014.
Sir Terry, who was born in Newport and grew up in Newbridge but now lives in the Canadian province of Ontario, made his fortune from telecoms and hi-tech companies, selling Newbridge Networks for around £1 billion. His total wealth is said to be £1.19 billion, up £68 million from last year. This year, he is ranked as the joint 88th richest person in the UK.
He has lost his title as richest person in Wales to Michael Moritz, a Cardiff-born former member of the board of directors of Google, and whose fortune has risen £563 million in the past 12 months to £1.688 billion.
Sir Terry, who helped to bring the 2010 Ryder Cup to Newport, has claimed in the past that it would better financially for Newport if it became a suburb of Cardiff. The Sunday Times notes how Sir Terry intends to build a convention centre at the resort.
According to the newspaper, the number of billionaires living in the UK has risen to more than 100 for the first time, while London is the city with the most billionaires with a reported 72 living in the capital.
Brothers Sri and Gopi Hinduja topped the overall UK super-rich list with a fortune of £11.9 billion. The Sunday Times’ Rich List will be released next week.
