A 69-YEAR-OLD Newport woman is in hospital with serious injuries following a crash on Saturday.

Avon and Somerset Police are appealing for witnesses following the 'serious' collision on the A46 at Swainswick, near Bath at around 8.30am on Saturday May 10.

The crash involved a Peugeot 206 and a Citroen C5. A couple from Newport, a man aged 70 and the 69-year-old woman, were trapped in the Citroen while a 19-year-old woman from Chippenham had to be freed from the Peugeot.

Both women remain in Frenchay Hospital in Bristol with serious injuries which are not believed to be life-threatening, while the man was released after treatment.

The road was closed until 2pm while the injured were freed from the vehicles, investigations were carried out at the scene and the road was cleared of debris and oil.

Sergeant Pete Trutch of the Collision Investigation Unit said: "We are grateful to motorists and residents of nearby villages for their patience throughout the disruption caused by this serious incident. Anyone who witnessed the crash or who may have any other information which could help our enquiries is asked to contact us on 101."
