A CYCLE path is to be developed along the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in Monmouthshire with the help of money awarded from the Welsh Government’s Local Transport Fund.

The project will receive £212,000 and is among 41 in Wales revealed in the latest round of funding, which is worth more than £15m.

The fund’s aim is to back projects that improve public transport, roads and walking and cycling facilities while helping deliver economic benefits.

Cyclists are able to use the canal path, but the aim of this project is to help avoid potential dangers along a route also popular with walkers by developing dedicated cycle lanes.

“This money will be used to improve public transport, walking and cycling facilities and traffic flows across Wales,” said Transport Minister Edwina Hart.

“The projects selected will support the Welsh Government’s priorities for jobs and growth, by improving access to enterprise zones and improving public transport to employment sites.

“Others will improve access to key facilities and services for those in disadvantaged areas, and some will encourage active travel and reduce reliance on the car.”
