IN a visit to the Royal Navy’s destroyer HMS Dragon yesterday, secretary of state for Wales David Jones and first minister Carwyn Jones emphasised the importance of the UK and Welsh governments working together to deliver a successful Nato summit for Wales.

The summit which will run from September 4 to 5 at Celtic Manor Resort, is being organised by the UK government on behalf of Nato.

Speaking to the Argus, the first minister said that plans for events leading up to the summit are “ongoing.”

“It is being organised by the UK government so we have to organise ourselves around their own arrangements,” he said.

“But we will be looking to host a large event at the beginning of the summit and of course to hosting other events around the summit as well.

Secretary of state David Jones added: “This is the biggest international security-related event in the world.

“The Nato summit itself is a huge opportunity to focus world attention on Wales in general and Newport in particular.”

“We want to see Newport rise to the challenge and I will be having meetings with Newport City Council,” he added.

“I know from having discussions with members of the council that they are very enthusiastic and we are looking to Newport to play its own part.”
