EIGHT Gwent post offices will share more than £112,000 in grant aid to help expand or provide new services for their customers.
The bulk of the funding, from the Welsh Government’s Post Office Diversification Fund, will go to: Caerwent, Gilwern, Penperlleni and Ebbw Vale (all £20,000), and Edlogan Square, in Croesyceiliog, Cwmbran (£19,950), for work which includes new windows, doors, floors, shop counters, shopping areas, and energy efficient lighting.
The fund is designed to help post offices remain as key parts of the communities they serve, and individual post offices must apply for funding based on consultation to establish the needs and wishes of its community, and how it plans to diversify services.
“The fund was originally set up for three years in 2009 with £3 million. Since then it has been extended and more money allocated,” said Jeff Cuthbert AM, minister for communities and tackling poverty. “It has helped 442 Welsh post offices strengthen their role in the community with grants totalling £6.6 million.”
Three other Gwent post offices will receive grant aid of up to £5,000 under the terms of the fund. Oakdale and Crumlin post offices will each receive £5,000, with Tredegar’s Cefn Golau post office receiving £2,843.37.
