THE hunt is on to discover Wales’s most popular National Lottery funded project of the last 20 years - and Newport's Velodrome has been selected to compete for the honour.

The National Lottery has launched the search as part of its 20th anniversary celebrations this year.

The ‘What’s Your National Treasure’ campaign asks people to visit Facebook.com/LotteryGoodCauses to choose the best from a range of iconic venues, landmarks and facilities that are vying for the title of National Treasure.

A total of £7.5 million of National Lottery funding helped create The Wales National Velodrome for cycling in Newport. The venue is home to Welsh Cycling and hosts a range of national and international competitions.

Newport cabinet member for leisure and culture, Cllr Debbie Wilcox said: “It is a tremendous honour that our work has been recognised when so many projects have been funded by The National Lottery. We’re urging our supporters to vote for us; we’d love to be crowned the nation’s most inspirational National Lottery project.”

The projects from Wales are Cardiff Castle, Galeri Caernarfon, Great Orme Tramway (Llandudno), Millennium Coastal Park (Llanelli), Millennium Stadium (Cardiff), National Botanic Garden of Wales (Carmarthenshire), National Library of Wales (Aberystwyth), National Waterfront Museum (Swansea), Ruthin Craft Centre (Denbighshire), Wales Millennium Centre (Cardiff), Wales National Pool (Swansea), Wales National Velodrome (Newport).

A winning face and place for Wales, along with those from Scotland, England and Northern Ireland, will be announced from the full list of 68 later this year.

Votes can be cast on Facebook.com/LotteryGoodCauses from 9am today (Mon) until midnight on Tuesday, May 27.
