WALES’ best-known weatherman is out and about in Newport this week exploring the city’s natural landscapes.

BBC Wales’ Derek Brockway is filming a new series of “Weatherman Walking”, due to be broadcast in January 2015 and was shown around 14 Locks Canal Centre and Allt yr Yn Nature Reserve in Newport this week by city artist Joseph Connor.

Mr Connor, who is in the process of painting 400 Newport landscapes in a year, showed the weatherman how to paint some of Wales’ finest views, using an electronic tablet.

Producer and director Steve Freer told the Argus: “Joseph will show Derek how he does his art and give a lesson to Derek who hasn’t done art since he was in school. It’s a good way to get children who use tablets and smart phones out and about so they can use that technology and make paintings, you don’t have to take paints or an easel. We’ll be following the canal and learning about the history of it, how the locks were built and what they were used for,” he said. “The show encourages people to go walking and discover places that are often on their own doorstep. This is a walk we haven’t done before, Newport has some fantastic landscapes.”
