ARGUS ARCHIVE: 25 years ago - Kinnock leads fight for Oakdale pit

South Wales Argus: CAMPAIGN: Neil Kinnock CAMPAIGN: Neil Kinnock

LABOUR leader and Islwyn MP Neil Kinnock was personally leading a campaign to secure the future of Gwent’s sole remaining pit, Oakdale, in his constituency.

Newport West MP, Paul Flynn called for a change in the 999 emergency call system, he wanted calls to be dealt with locally as they had been previously.

An overwhelming majority of mums to be were defying a Gwent health chief’s plea and opting to have their babies at County Hospital, Griffithstown.

The controversial Pentrepoeth plan for 500 homes and shops along with a new school and health centre, had its first airing at a public meeting at Bassaleg Comprehensive School.

Oakdale has been sold down the river and Caerphilly cbc are no support either. The institute is in st fagans and the hospital sold off for private housing. At the end of the day the local miners paid for these buildings and they should have been given (at least one of them) back to the community. Oakdale hotel is boarded up and the toilets were demolished. Wind turbines are visible and blend in with the electricity pylons. Housing estates all over the place and the houses behind oakdale garage are a total disgrace. Who gave planning permission for them?
Neil Kinnock has done very well out of politics he is on the same bandwagon of wealth as Blair.
He did nothing for Oakdale and the working man.

So the UKIP styled racism, sexism, homophobia and general language of hatred directed to anyone who is welsh, in social housing, or earns less than £50k that has become the lingua franca of this website is OK but an everyday phrase like taking the p*** is not. Nice values.
'Extracting the urine' may have been a better way to put it?
