THE main ticket office in Newport train station could be closed for another four weeks as improvement works continue.

Passengers using Newport train station will have noticed a temporary ticket office in the main entrance hall, while the original office is closed for maintenance work.

The station reopened in 2010 after a £22 million development funded by Network Rail and the Welsh Assembly Government with support from Arriva Trains Wales.

A Network Rail spokesman said: “The work we are undertaking at Newport is linked to the original station re-development project. Essentially, it’s snagging work to remedy issues with glare and draughts while also taking the opportunity to improve the work stations for the ticket counter staff.

“We’ve constructed a temporary ticket office while the work is being undertaken in order to minimise disruption to passengers. The move back to the permanent ticket office will take place by the end of June and we’d like to thank passengers for their patience during this process.”

In 2010, the station opened to much fanfare in time for the Ryder Cup but many also complained about the lack of signs and information desks and the fact there is only one ticket office.

Commuters said the cafe and WH Smith shop are now too far away from platforms.

Roof leaks plagued Newport Station users three years after the multi-million pound revamp, with rail bosses admitting there were interface issues between some of the materials used in its construction.

In March, it was revealed passenger figures for the city centre railway station had fallen on the year below.
