CAERPHILLY residents are being asked their views on changes to recycling which would mean they sorted waste at home prior to it being collected.

Currently, all dry recycling in the county is collected together, with a separate collection for food and garden waste and another for other waste.

But the Welsh Government is now looking at whether people should sort out recycling prior to collection, putting plastic, cans and paper into different boxes.

A council spokesman said participation levels in kerbside recycling collections are at their highest level, meaning the amount going to landfill is lower.

“Our collection systems are geared towards busy, modern day lifestyles and this is reinforced by our public satisfaction levels which are persistently high and increasing”, the spokesman said.

“It is worth noting that a recent survey revealed 95 per cent of residents would be reluctant to recycle if they were compelled to sort recycling at home. Indeed nationally co-ordinated door knocking campaigns and public road shows confirm residents are generally very happy with the existing service provision.

“A change to a source segregated recycling scheme will have significant impacts on our finances as it will require significant investment in new vehicles and reprocessing technologies.”
