GUNNERS based in Newport will be walking across Wales for a week to raise money for charity.

A team from 104 Regiment of the Royal Artillery based at Raglan Barracks will be led by WO2 (warrant officer class 2) Simon Cleary.

The group will be walking the entire length of Offa’s Dyke and start their trek on Monday from Prestatyn to raise money for the Royal Artillery Charitable Fund (RACF).

To complete the challenge, they will need to walk about 26 miles every day but WO2 Cleary is not fazed by the task ahead.

He said: “We have got breaks along the way. We have our army beds and we’ll have a barbecue every night.

We’re raising as much as possible.”

His team has between eight and 12 members but some members will swap over as they complete the route.

WO2 Cleary last raised about £3,500 for charity last year with 19 members at his former base, at the Royal School of Artillery in Wiltshire.

The RACF supports all retired and serving gunners and their dependents in need.
