BLAENAU Gwent council is carrying out an informal consultation into the future of primary school provision in the Ebbw Fach Valley – with a preferred option to build a new community school on the former Six Bells colliery site.
The proposal is part of the council’s 21st Century Schools programme, which aims to improve the school estate across Blaenau Gwent to raise educational standards.
The new school would cater for 360 pupils (with space for 420 places) and would also include provision for pupils with additional needs.
It would replace Bryngwyn and Queen Street Primary Schools, which have buildings that do not meet 21st Century School standards.
A consultation document will be available to view, with three possible options for re-organisation.
The consultation will start on Monday June 23 and end on Monday September 22.
An open day consultation has been arranged for July 14 at the Metropole Theatre in Abertillery, from 9am to 7pm and interested parties are welcome to go along to find out more and offer views.
A copy of the consultation document will be sent to parents and governors and is also available at: blaenau-gwent.gov.uk from Monday.
The options are: to keep both Bryngwyn and Queen Street primary schools open; to educate pupils in a 360-place primary school split over the Bryngwyn and Queen Street Primary School sites, with the existing buildings being upgraded; pupils to be educated in a new-build community primary school.In September, the council and Education Recovery Board will decide whether to take forward a specific proposal to formal consultation.
