THE captain of the Newport Gwent Dragons will kick-start the Caerphilly 10k on Sunday (JUNE 22).

Andrew Coombs will join the mayor of Caerphilly council, Cllr David Carter, to start the race which will see over 2,000 runners tackle a 10km route in and around Caerphilly town centre, starting and finishing in the shadow of Caerphilly Castle.

During the race, Coombs and other players will keep families and spectators entertained with a Commonwealth Games themed sports park.

The sports park will be near the start/finish line in Crescent Road and will give people the chance to try a number of sports, ranging from cycling and climbing to tennis and football. Free t-shirts will be given to children who complete activities and record them using a special ‘PasSport’ which will be handed out on the day.

Cllr Dave Poole, cabinet member for community and leisure services, said: “With the Newport Gwent Dragons coming along to this iconic event we are really cementing our partnership with them following their use of the brand new Caerphilly County Borough Centre for Sporting Excellence. The second Caerphilly 10k is set to be bigger and better than last year and I wish everyone taking part the best of luck!”
