The gruesome murder of Daniel Morgan, a private detective from Gwent, led to a demand for an investigation in a Commons speech by MP Simon Hughes.
Roads were closed and nearby buildings hosed down when Pontnewynydd Methodist church hall was gutted by fire. The adjourning chapel was also severely damaged.
British Telecom admitted another mistake after a 999 emergency call was wrongly put through to police in Bridgend. The delay wasted precious time as the call was regarding a woman being attacked in the street.
David Bowie appeared at Newport Centre and surprised queueing fans by strolling nonchalantly through the front door just a few hours before the concert was due to begin.
