ARGUS ARCHIVE: 50 years ago - End for coal shipments from Newport

First published in News

Coal shipments from Newport Docks were to come to an end on August 29. Trade was then due to be transferred to Barry Docks in accordance with a new policy from the British Transport Docks Board.

AS a result of controlled tipping, Newport’s Parks and Cemetries Committee planned to convert 26 acres of wasteland at Maesglas into playing firlds within the next ten years.

Extensions to the over-crowded Newport and Monmouthshire College of Technology, costing £243,000, were approved by the Department of Education and Science.
