Newport Nato summit symbol is 'just a logo' - city leader

'JUST A LOGO': Newport Council leader Bob Bright says there are many other ways Newport can promote itself for the Nato summit

THE Labour leader of Newport City Council has said that while it would be great if Newport was on the Nato Wales summit symbol, it is just a logo.

There has been anger in Newport after the name of the host city was left off the official summit logo.

Cllr Bob Bright initially said that he was pleased Newport was acknowledged in the logo thanks to the inclusion of the Transporter Bridge, but later cabinet member for regeneration Cllr John Richards said he was very disappointed by it, showing an apparent difference of opinion among the cabinet.

Cllr Bright said he first saw the design when it was made public.

He said the earlier comment came after he was told about the Transporter Bridge being included in the logo “and obviously I was pleased about that”.

“Although it would have been great if Newport’s name was used on the logo, it has been known for a long time that the summit was going to be called Nato Wales,” he said. “It is just a logo and there will be many other ways that the city will maximise the opportunity of hosting a global event.”

Cllr Bright reiterated that he’s talked to people at the “highest level of government” about the need to promote Newport and said he was grateful to the secretary of state for Wales, David Jones, who Cllr Bright said “is working hard to ensure that happens.”

“Newport is a small city but is now included in the same group as previous host cities such as Chicago, Paris, Brussels and London by hosting a summit of this size and significance. It demonstrates the city has the ability, infrastructure and energy to host one of the world’s most high-profile events,” Cllr Bright added.

Meanwhile Gwent Police says that it is not planning on using water cannon in the policing effort around the Nato summit at this stage.

Protests are expected to take place in the days before the summit. In a statement a force spokesman said: “Water cannon has never previously been deployed on the UK mainland and we have no plans to make use of this tactical option whilst policing the 2014 Nato Summit.”

The summit is on September 4 and 5.

I agree its a symbol. In my opinion it would have been a better idea to hold the Nato summit here when we had something to show at present we are rebuilding Newport and we only have a "fancy" hotel on the edge of town to show for it.

Well, I suppose it is 'just a logo', but so is the hammer and sickle on the red flag. To any socialist or anti-socialist it's what it symbolises is what counts.

Now, if NATO's war with Russia finally materialises and its soldiers think "flip this!" and hand over the regimental colours at the first opportunity, I wonder if their generals will be so easy-going and say: that's alright troops don't worry about it; hey, it's just a logo...?

Bob Bright just doesn't get it, does he?

This event is supposed to be a great opportunity to promote the city and 'put Newport on the map' blah, blah, blah.

But it has fallen at the very first fence. As far as the world is concerned the summit is in Wales, no more, no less. Wales is getting the promotion and 'being put on the map', and Newport is simply a small unmentioned part of that.

Stay away from marketing Bob. You don't have the first clue mate.

The NATO summit to take place in September is being hosted in Wales in the City of Newport at the venue of the 2010 Ryder Cup – the Celtic Manor Hotel.
So far so good. 28 nations will be represented with 150 or so VIPs with associated entourage. Thousands including the world media will descend on this unsuspecting city and its environs. Indeed a focused opportunity to thrash out many of the worlds problems. But minutia dominates the local situation.
Small town, even small thinking dominates at a local level. The show is being run from Westminster which is fine if all goes well but if the wheel comes off it will be Wales’ fault. Parts of Newport will be in lock-down and residents in close proximity see it as just yet another irritation. In the mean time the local politicians didn’t want it to be the NATO Wales summit but the City of Newport summit – paralleling Chicago and Paris!! Hang-on, Newport doesn’t come close to these let alone its close neighbour, Cardiff. NATO Wales is just about right. To placate Newport the Newport transporter bridge is in the logo. Gee!
The buzz is that Barak Obama is coming to town and will no doubt want a round on the 2010 Ryder cup course. Forget about world issues and let’s concentrate on UK/Welsh/Newport profile and showcase Wales. Summit? What summit?
Now c’mon guys don’t let the seriousness of the event spoil a good promotion!
