A NEWPORT curry house believed to be the oldest in the city has been named the best in Wales by the Sunday Telegraph.

New Lahore, on Lower Dock Street near the Dolman Theatre, was the only Welsh curry house to be named in a list of top 20 British curry houses by the Sunday Telegraph food section last week, ranking fourth, ahead of top Mayfair restaurants.

The reviewer praised the restaurant’s enthusiastic staff and described it as “the perfect place to dine out...boasting exceptional flavour and enthusiastic but not overbearing service.”

The restaurant, which opened in 1961 and only seats 40 people, serves “old fashioned” curry, explained owner Shah Shafee.

“Customers refer to it as dark curry,” he said. “One of our specialities is jhal munipuri which is a very authentic, fairly hot dish.

“In the 1960s and 70s customers used to bring their own pots and pans to take away the curry because there weren’t any containers. In those days they had a bouncer and were open until four in the morning.

“I’m very proud of my loyal customers who have been giving me support for a long time and I’d like to thank them,” he said. “This accolade is not for me, it’s for my customers and staff.”

It isn't very often that I find myself agreeing with anything written in the Telegraph... However, I've been visiting the restaurant regularly since 1979, way before Chicken Tikka Massala became our national dish, and have never been disappointed. The New Lahore is excellent!

Me too, which usually led to strange comments and inquisitive glances from my fellow passengers on the Brynglas bus. Loved eating the food with my family, which always compensated for the stressful journey home which had been spent "nursing" a piping hot saucepan.

Don't forget to use the food hygiene ratings which are available free on the Food Standards Agency website, these are always a good indication about how the Restaurant is run, good or bad!
Just had a quick glance, New Delhi had a 2, The Jewel Balti a 3 and the New Lahore a 4 which is good enough for me and I will be booking very soon although I'm sure they'll be busy after the extra publicity. Good on them.

Quite agree, I was very disappointed when we went there recently after reading the "rave reviews". I'd been there once before, in the eighties, and found the curry tasteless, my visit this time was the same. The dishes tasted watered down and so bland we couldn't finish them - as was the case in that previous occasion. Much prefer the well spiced (flavoursome ) meals at our local take-away, The Indian Cottage".

Tripadvisor is a pretty good indicator, bearing in mind a lot of people only leave a comment on Tripadvisor when they are unhappy. Around 130 of the 230 restaurants listed in Newport score 4 or above out of 5. Top rankings in dor curry houses in Newport are: 4 Lahore, 6 Shabaraj, 20 Balti Thai, 25 Vanilla Spice, 44 Indian Cottage, 52 Dehli, 54 Jewel Balti.

Can never understand why people can't be pleased for somewhere in Newport doing well! I love the food in the Lahore, some people won't as it's quite traditional, simples! But why oh why do people have to be so negative? If you can't say something good, sometimes it's best to say nothing.

Whenever I think of the Lahore I think of the large zinc bath of chips that used to be in the back of the restaurant, on the floor between the restaurant and toilet in the late 60s early 70s.
I wouldn't like to say what I saw some guys contributing to the bath, in the early hours.
There were some good "Indians" around in those days, the Ara Asiatic opposite the now Tom Toya, the Golden Curry down Pill and of course the Kizzie. On a Friday we frequently went from the Maindee (then a cracking pub ) to the Seven View , to the grill above the T A. for a steak , then up Cleos / Alexandras Palace and then over to the kizzie with possibly Freddie Waldron on the door and then Alan Williams. Good days when Newport had something about it and a proud rugby town.
