Newport town bridge closed after potential suicide bid

First published in News

NEWPORT'S old town bridge was briefly closed off this afternoon after police were called to a "potential suicide attempt".

Gwent Police said they received calls by members of the public at around 4.50pm after a man in his 30s was seen walking on the wrong side of the bridge.

Police negotiators were called and managed to bring the man to safety. He is currently being assessed by police. The road is in the process of being re-opened.

When considering suicide but before you make a commitment to act upon such thoughts , this would be considered a potential suicide.

Suicide is a desperate act by someone who is in intense pain and wants their pain to stop. That is a HUMAN response to extreme pain, not a selfish one. And over 90 percent of the people who die by suicide have a mental illness at the time of their death, so they are not thinking clearly.
And those who use the word “selfish” are merely helping perpetuate the stigma associated with suicide.
