ROGERSTONE councillors say that work on Pye Corner train station is on target to finish by its intended completion date.

City councillors Tom Bond, Chris Evans and Sally Mlewa said the building work, which began last March, is due to be completed later this year.

Last May funding was announced for a new station at Pye Corner and will feature a single platform, CCTV, ticket purchasing facilities, a car park for 70 cars and customer information screens.

The majority of the station’s construction will be within the site boundary, however, there will be improvements made to the highway infrastructure and to Western Valley Road. The improvements include a new mini roundabout at the junction with High Cross Lane which will provide access to the new station car park.

Due to health and safety legislation some work can only be carried out to the new station platform and the access road from Western Valley Road during periods when trains are not running. As a result this will lead to occasional weekend and night time working.

The work on Western Valley Road will mean that the normal two-way traffic flow will be affected, however, work will be done so it does not affect peak hour traffic. In the interest of safety to the public some work on this road will be done on weekends. If work is done on the weekend it will be done between 8am to 1pm on Saturdays, if there are any change to these hours, affected residents will be notified in advance.

A new station in Newport and the trains won't even be stopping at Newport station. Disgraceful.

Completely agree. The WAG's inability to run trains through Gaer tunnel is nothing short of total incompetence.

The location lacks foresight. If trains to Caerphilly ever materialise (unlikely I know), the station is in the wrong location to be an effective interchange. There's no excuses here - just poor planning and foresight. (Also, another press release from Rogerstone councillors - the Argus had far to look for that one!)

This service, Ebbw Vale to Cardiff struggles a lot of the time with adequate provision for commuters. I use this line 5 days a week and when the service is bas, it's very BAD! The though of them adding another large stop leaves me cold! This will certainly turn into a comedy of error as I doubt if Arriva will cope with the extra passengers. It's a complete joke. They should concentrate on getting the current service sorted before adding extra stress to an already unpredictable service!!

This train does not go to Ebbw Vale. It stops nearly two miles from the town, and is nearer Cwm than Ebbw Vale. Now its going to stop at Pye Corner, again, nowhere near a town centre, what is the point in having a train that misses an entire city centre!

When this station opens, I predict the demise of the X16 bus service between Risca and Cardiff.

We can't have a subsidised bus competing against a subsidised train, can we?
