A NEWPORT butcher’s shop is getting into the Nato spirit this week with the launch of its own Nato sausage and burger.

The city’s oldest butchers Turner A.D. & Sons, located in Newport market, launched its own Nato sausage and burgers yesterday in an effort to ramp up the excitement ahead of September’s summit.

The gourmet sausage and burgers are made up a variety of ingredients-aimed to represent the various countries coming to the summit.

Owner Pat Turner said that the ‘fantastic tasting' sausage is made up of sausage; pork; bacon; garlic; black pepper; smoked paprika; mixed herbs; chives; nutmeg; and Worcester sauce.

“The idea is to bring the community together in support of Nato in Newport,” he said.

“We want it participate in the Nato spirit.

“I think the customers will really like it as it is a fantastic tasting burger and sausage.

“The smoked paprika really brings out the flavour.”

Mr Turner and James Thomas started discussing their idea for Nato-themed food last week and have spent the last few days experimenting with flavours to create the perfect Nato produce.

The butcher plans to sell the sausages and burgers right the way through the summer.

“We are selling here from today fresh off the sausage counter as well as the hot food counter,” he added.

“People can by an 8oz sausage baguette for £3 and a 4oz burger on special offer for £2.50. We have been making sausages for 25 years and have over 30 different recipes.

“We have won the steak award for the best burger in South and East Wales twice – in 2008 and 2010 – so we know what we are doing.”

The summit will be held at the Celtic Manor Resort on September 4 and 5, and world leaders such as Barack Obama, Francois Hollande and Angela Merkel are expected to attend.
