DOZENS of skaters aged 10 to 24 jumped, ollied and hopped their way to victory at the Abergavenny Youth Service skate jam on Monday.

The jam, which was accompanied by a family fun day, saw around 70 youngsters compete at the skate park outside the Youth Centre next to Lower Meadow Fields in Abergavenny between 11am and 6pm.

There were beginner and advanced scooter competitions as well as 'jams' or competitions for BMX bikes and skateboards and two flat-land games of skating and scootering.

There was even a high jump where riders could bunny hop on a BMX, hop on a scooter and ollie on a skateboard, a move in which the skater kicks the tail of the board down while jumping in order to make the board pop into the air.

Nearby the family fun day included face painting, inflatable football, a climbing wall, an inflatable obstacle course, a raffle, tombola, table top sale and go karts, as well as a stall by Gwent Police where they protectively marked bicycles and the Choices drugs information bus.

Big-name sponsors for this year's event included Sidewalk skateboard magazine, Ride BMX magazine, Freestyle Skate Store, Proline Skates, Motion Ramp Park, Source BMX and Dogg Scooters, and thanks to their involvement this year's event was bigger and better attended than ever, explained area youth and community worker Steve Caswell.

"This time I pushed to get as much sponsorship as possible and it was lovely that such big companies came back and supported the event," said Mr Caswell, 28, who has been with the Youth Service since 2010.

"The numbers were brilliant, whenever we run a skate jam attendance is always good but this was the most we've ever had turn up to compete.

"I'd like to say a huge thank you to the sponsors, the community and young people that turned up to support the event, it was a huge success and now we're looking forward to the next one, which will be the same time next year."
