THIS summer marks the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War and as part of the centenary commemorations, The Blaenavon Community Heritage Museum has been awarded funding from the Heritage Lottery Fund to research and write a history of Blaenavon and its people during the war years.

Over the past six months the museum’s volunteers have been delving into the archives and scouring through old newspapers, letters, photographs and official documents to find out more about Blaenavon in the years between 1914 and 1918.

The book reveals local attitudes towards the war and features the poignant personal stories of many of Blaenavon’s soldiers, some of whom never returned home.

Furthermore, it looks at the town’s industries, munitions work and trade unionism, as well as examining the role of women, local support for the troops, Blaenavon’s Belgian refugees and the social condition of the town.

The museum anticipates that the book will be published in the autumn but if you’ve got photographs, stories or information relating to the above, please get in touch.
