IT might only be a few weeks since the end of the World Cup, but a new domestic football season kicks off this weekend.

The Football League season starts tonight, with the big guns of the Premier League in action from next Saturday.

Tomorrow Newport County begin their second season back in the Football League after their 25-year non-league exile.

As as is the case with all football supporters, County fans will be approaching the new term with optimism.

And so they should, in our view.

As we have said before, last season was an excellent one for the club. A mid-table finish after a quarter of a century away from the Football League was no mean feat.

County remains a club on the up, on and off the field.

New training facilities in Newport, a thriving youth set-up, some highly-praised community work, and a playing squad with competition for every position all adds up to a positive position.

There are no stand-out teams in League Two this year and, while the bookies believe County will finish in the middle of the pack again, who knows where a run of good results could take the club.

As County's official media partners for a second season, we wish Justin Edinburgh and his team every success for the season ahead.
