DO something different with the kids this summer and take on an exciting maze challenge at Hendrewennol Fruit Garden.

THIS SUMMER, visitors to the Vale of Glamorgan farm will be able to walk from Caernarfon to Caerphilly in just a couple of hours as they take part in a unusual maze challenge.

Hendrewennol Fruit Garden, a family-run soft fruit farm in the Vale of Glamorgan has teamed up with environmental charity Size of Wales to grow a giant maze out of maize in the shape of Wales.

Believed to be the biggest map of Wales ever created by maze-makers, the maze will also be open after dark on weekends throughout August. .

The farm has partnered with unique Welsh charity Size of Wales who, with the support of the Welsh public, are protecting and sustaining an area of rainforest the size of Wales. Size of Wales is a Welsh initiative to help sustain and protect an area of rainforest the Size of Wales as part of the national response to climate change. The Cardiff-based charity supports tropical forests in Africa and Latin America.

“We’re thrilled to be involved with this ambitious project.” said Claire Raisin, Director of Size of Wales.

“This Wales maze is about one hectare in size; Wales the country is actually two million hectares, and with the help of the Welsh people, we’re protecting an area of rainforest the size of our nation in projects around the world. This maze is a good reminder of the scale of that task.”

“It’s brilliant to see the whole of Wales in maze form, we've been around it already, and it’s fun for us big kids too!” she added.

Every year the pick-your-own fruit farm grows a maize maze in a different shape. Last year’s effort took the shape of a swallow (or gwennol), the farm’s logo.

After some maze-filled fun, visitors can also have a go at picking fruit on the farm which annually offers wonderful fresh soft fruit and vegetables including raspberries, strawberries, and gooseberries.

Currently the farm offers raspberries which guest can enjoy picking before trying out the tasty Hendrewennol-made jams in the centres cafe.

The farm is open 10am-6pm between Easter and Halloween.

The maze will cost £3.50 for children and £2 for adults.

Extended opening hours for the maze which will be kept open later on certain days throughout the summer can be found by visiting www.hendrewennol.com
